Nutty For… [8.29]

This week was busy, no if’s, and’s or but’s. I was hardly at my house except to sleep or (maybe) eat, and I definitely had no time to blog. Which sucks, because I had all these grand plans for some posts, too. Ah, well. That’s what happens when you start a new job and are still working your other part-timer and half of that staff quits. But that’s a story for another day.

Thankfully, I have a little bit of breathing room right this minute, so I’m churning out a Nutty For post! I didn’t bookmark tons of things this week for nothin’.

Nutty For… Imperfections
I pick at the skin around my nails (gross, I know). I trip almost once a day. My spine is curved. I still pinch my stomach each morning out of a bad habit ingrained in me from years ago. No one is perfect, but I’m okay with that.

Nutty for… Beer
One of Cassie’s friends, Emily, started a blog about a week ago. This week, she had a great post about brewery visit tips. I’ve only done one beer tasting before at a brewery in Athens, OH, so I definitely need some pointers from a more seasoned source like Emily.

Nutty for… Flowing Locks
I will literally try anything and everything to get my hair to grow longer. Back in the day, I had suuuper long locks, and I’m dying to get them back. Maybe I should use this argan oil mixture?

Annnnnd if we’re on the topic of hair, here’s how to get the perfect tousled look. Trying it as soon as I buy an alligator hair clip.

Do you ever get IG envy? I do pretty much every day. Seriously. It’s embarrassing. I’ve tried and tried to take just the right photo too many times to count – you know, when you arrange and rearrange the setting, move to different lighting, etc. Oh, wait. Am I the only one who does that? Well, guys, the the struggle is over.

Have you ever taken a personality test? Apparently, I’m an INJF. Thought Catalog had a random post describing INJF’s, and strangely, it was really spot on for me (i.e. I have a classic case of RBF – aka resting bitch face – but actually love to listen to people and get to know them, behind the shield I put up).

Recent Eats [8.26.14]

I haven’t done a recent eats post for a solid month! I can promise you that I still ate a lot of the same stand-by foods [i.e. oats, avocado toast, chicken salads, etc.]. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, amiright?

Regardless, I’m here to share with you some of the food that’s been making me happy and full.

I’ve been trying to sneak more meatless meals onto my family’s dinner plates as of late. One of the meals we enjoyed was Oh She Glows three bean salad. We had baked potatoes on the side.

I made an AMAZING bowl of chocolate zucchini oats recently. It then appeared in at least one or two breakfasts per week for the last few weeks. All I did was add two tbsp. of dark chocolate cocoa powder to my oats. The coconut on top (and the fruit) balanced out the hint of bitterness of the chocolate… which I liked anyway, since I love dark chocolate.

My brother is a bit of a picky eater, so sometimes I try to keep things simple for him (important: sometimes). I knew that he would love Lexi’s zesty chicken bites, and he definitely did. In fact, I put the seasoning on chicken legs for him recently, too.

One morning I made my own cereal. I’d run out of slivered almonds, which I usually use, so I decided to use sunflower seeds instead. It was a good sub!

This is an example of a time that a pizza crust simultaneously failed but also succeeded. My dad and I were home alone one night, so I made us some pizza (his with pepperoni). I wanted to grill the pizza, but as soon as I put it on the grill it totally broke apart. I made the crust with oat flour, so that’s probably why. I decided to bake it, we ate it with forks, and all was well.

After yoga and before work one morning, I nommed on peach overnight oats topped with almond butter. Peaches and AB are a great combo unless you think you have salmonella tainted almond butter.

I went out to Shady Grove with friends one evening, and look! No salad! We were going to have drinks afterward, and I felt like that wouldn’t be a fabulous combo. I opted for a veggie wrap. It was great! The fries tasted pretty good, too. 😉

Chipotle!!! I had this twice last week because it’s been a crazy month at my part-time job. I also felt lazy and not like making dinner. Hence: this huge bowl of salsa and gauc.

This smoothie was one of the most satisfying breakfasts I’ve made for myself in a while. I haven’t had a chance to make smoothies too often this summer because I haven’t wanted to wake my family, even on weekdays, so I jumped at the chance to make this one twice in a row. It’s so simple: coconut water, almond milk, frozen blueberries, frozen banana, chia seeds, spinach, almond butter and ice. I topped it with Cascadian Farms Honey Nut O’s.

Getting chocolate chip pancakes with my brother at a local joint is one of my favorite things to do. Now we’re limited to weekends, since he’s starting up school. It’s weird this year since it won’t be the one time per few months that I really get to see him – I’m not going anywhere this fall! (Oh, and on that note, yes I’m sad I’m not at OU right now.)

This past weekend, I hung out with Cassie all Saturday. We got manis and pedis, walked around Pittsburgh, and eventually ended up at Il Pizzaiolo, which I’ve been dying to go to. The waiter explained to us that they make their Neapolitan pizzas in an oven that takes like 90 seconds to cook the food through and has rocks from Mount Vesuvius in it.

This combo … it’s just a lot of yes. Sam posted about it last week (and a few other times, too), but I actually remembered to make it this past weekend! Oh. my. god. Dippy egg on top of PB&J oats?! She’s a genius.

My brother, mom and I went to Panera over the weekend before we did a little school shopping. I was hungrier than usual, so I ordered the power chicken hummus bowl and a cup of black bean soup

Nutty For…

I used to do Friday Favorites all the time. I thought it was fun to feature great posts, stories and recipes I saw throughout the week. I stopped for a while because I thought it was an overdone post topic, but I’ve decided to bring them back… with a new name: “Nutty For…” This was basically staring me right in the face – no idea how it took me this long to realize it. I’m working on some ideas and ways to make my blog even more “me” and more harmonious.

Nutty For… Skinny Jeans
I’ve been wearing skinny jeans almost exclusively since 9th grade, so when I saw that skinny jeans are apparently on their way out, my heart almost stopped. What am I going to wear?!! No pants, I guess. Who needs ’em anyway?

Nutty for… No Photoshop
One of my favorite brands, Aerie, already made this pledge a few months ago, and now Modcloth is hopping on the ‘real’ train. This comes in accordance with a pledge to keep advertising more true to life, especially when young people are more likely to see it. I love that.

Nutty for… Writing
Let’s go back to our elementary days and work with an “if, then” statement for a minute. “If I have a blog, then I probably like to write.” Mind Body Green posted a list of awesome tips to streamline and improve your writing this week.

Nutty for… Morning
I really believe that your morning can set the tone for the rest of your day. Example: get in a good workout and have a delicious breakfast, and you’ll be more likely to have a positive day. What’s your morning routine? Here’s what 10 successful people do to start their days.

Heather over at Fit ‘n’ Cookies started a YouTube channel with a pretty comprehensive video encyclopedia of basic exercises. Search Google no further! Tell me that’s not the coolest thing.
